Update departments

This guide shows you how to update an existing department. You can change the department name, reassign the parent department, or modify the tag colour.

Prerequisites

  • You have the required permissions (see above)
  • At least one department exists (Create departments)

Instructions

Click the Settings icon in the left sidebar, then navigate to Org SettingsOrg StructureDepartments. Click the overflow menu (···) next to the department you want to update and select Edit.

Step 1: Change the department name (optional)

  1. Update the Name field.
  2. The name must be at least 2 characters long.

Step 2: Change the parent department (optional)

To move a department within the hierarchy:

  1. Click the Parent Department dropdown.
  2. Search for and select a different department.
  3. To make it a top-level department, clear the selection.

Step 3: Change the tag colour (optional)

  1. Click the Department tag colour dropdown.
  2. Select a new colour from the palette, or choose a custom colour.
  3. Preview how the tag will appear below the colour picker.

Step 4: Save the department

  1. Click Save.

The department is updated and a confirmation message appears. Changes are reflected immediately throughout Klarify.

Troubleshooting

IssueSolution
Save button is disabledEnsure the department name has at least 2 characters.
Cannot select a department as parentA department cannot be its own parent. Additionally, you cannot create circular hierarchies (e.g., setting a child department as the parent).
